Fergráfica Student Residence
Santa Apolónia, Lisbon
The former Fergráfica headquarters was built in the early 1960s to house the printing works, the Portuguese railway company. The building accommodated heavy machinery, offices, administrative workspaces, storage areas and staff facilities. It extends over five floors, incorporating double-height spaces across different areas and levels.
The project converts the building into student accommodation comprising 130 rooms and apartments, arranged along the main façades. The communal areas — including a café, canteen, library, reading room, gym and laundry — are distributed throughout the building, occupying its most significant spaces.
The intervention preserves the industrial character, drawing on its generous scale and material and spatial diversity to accommodate the new uses.
