Luísa de Gusmão School
Penha de França, Lisbon
The rehabilitation of Escola Luísa de Gusmão is guided by a clear principle: to intervene without intervening. The project preserves the building’s architectural identity and collective memory, restoring its defining elements, including the panels by Severo Portela Júnior and Querubim Lapa.
The original spatial structure and circulation are retained. Three new volumes — the Entrance Hall, the Library and the Teachers’ Workspace — complete the programme, extending the school’s architectural language through a contemporary reinterpretation of its proportions, alignments and materials.
Structural reinforcement, new infrastructure and bioclimatic strategies improve accessibility, comfort and energy performance.
