The building is located near the archaeological remains of Bamiyan, in central Afghanistan, within a landscape of exceptional cultural significance designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The project is set in a rugged rural valley framed by surrounding mountains and deeply marked by the monumental Buddha statues that once stood on its slopes until their destruction in 2001.
The building mediates the difference in elevation between the two levels of the site, connecting them through both interior and exterior spaces. Entrances are provided at both levels, clearly organising the programme into two distinct areas: education and research spaces on the lower floor, and an exhibition hall on the upper floor, which benefits from generous ceiling heights and open spaces.
A central courtyard introduces a green oasis at the heart of the building, becoming a key element in the articulation of its different levels. Rather than establishing rigid visual separations, the spaces remain interconnected through the courtyard, circulation routes, and a series of internal voids and atriums.
In response to the cultural and social heritage of the site, as well as the needs of the local community, the project makes extensive use of locally sourced materials and traditional construction techniques. This approach reduces the energy required for material production and transportation while supporting the local economy and strengthening the relationship between the building and its context.
